Access control is a security technique that can be used to regulate access to premises to particular persons, depending on the time of day, day of week, specific date during the year.  Access can be programmed using the sophisticated access control algorithm of the controller and can be tailored to every requirement.

Access control systems limit access to campuses, buildings, rooms and physical IT assets by employing various techniques to grant access to those who are entitled to.  Techniques like proximity card readers (EM or Mifare cards) are employed where the entitled people show their cards to the proximity readers to get access to secured premises. Other techniques include biometric methods like fingerprints, face recognition and vein recognition systems increasing the security level of the secured premises.

Network access control systems can be programmed to grant access only to predefined time periods, deny access during holidays and defining groups of people who have access to the secured premises.  All groups, time periods and other parameters can be combined and programmed into the system as the security administrator wishes.  Everything can be programmed using a computer software which records all actions taken by the users and produces unique and customised reports to the security administrator.

Standalone access controllers provide an economic solution without access to computer and reports but providing basic access to premises to registered users.
